We’re featuring a wide range of Australian authors participating in ARR2019 in venues across Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
Today we’re having Elevenses with ML Tompsett, author of three romances in the genre of contemporary romance. She will be attending ARR2019 in Melbourne.

When did you first realise you wanted to be an author?
From an early age. I enjoyed creating stories in my head. However, actually becoming a published author is a whole different ball game.

Why romance and not a different genre?
I have always enjoyed romance, especially historical romance. However, when I discovered paranormal and realised there was such a genre as paranormal romance, my brain and muse went into overdrive.

What was the first romance you read and why did you love it?
Oh wow. I remember discovering and reading one of my mother’s old Mills & Boon romance books when I was young—and I wanted more. What it was called, I have no idea. I was eager to read it without being discovered.

What is the single most important characteristic for an aspiring author wanting to be a published writer?
Never give up. Tomorrow is another day. And you will complete your manuscript. Never allow someone to tell you, ‘You can never achieve anything by becoming an author.’ And never allow someone to dictate, ‘You can never do something you enjoy.’

What is your favourite part of creating a story?
The lives of my characters and who they are. Sometimes I keep all the information in my head and forget to write it down in the books.

What is your best tip for fighting writer’s block/writer’s fear?
When I work it out, I’ll tell you! LOL. Try listening to good music, to set the flow and mood of the book. Or if nothing comes to you, move away from the computer and read a book and become lost within the words and journey for an hour or two.

Pick a favourite (bold your preference)
– series or stand-alone?
– ebook, paperback or hardcover?
– first person or third?

Who has been an inspiration to you, in life or your writing career?
In my writing career, I would say the beautiful Alli Sinclair was a significant inspiration to me. I was stuck in a bad place and debating if I should give up writing and my goal of becoming a published author. She inspired me, reach into me and released that small part of hope I had left inside to focus on and continue my writing.

Tell us about your latest release, Kept in the Dark of Love and Lust, in 100 words or less
It’s about a hard-working city girl fighting to keep her job. She stumbles across a new world of paranormal shifters, only to discover it is part of her past, which has been hidden from her. She soon discovers her new handsome client is no ordinary client and is part of her hidden past—who just happens to be her soul mate and husband.

What else will you be working on in 2019?
I am currently working on completing book four in my Sex, Lies and Family Secrets series—It’s You. This is Alley’s story and her journey into the world of Dark Ones and shifters, and the love she has for two men. Can she have both? Or will she end up alone, to raise her daughter. And while she thought life as a princess was never easy, now she has to contend with becoming a Queen.

Please recommend an Aussie romance you read recently
Wow. I have read so many books so far this year. Anything by the talented JA Low, KM Golland and Tracey Pedersen. And don’t forget the gorgeous Alli Sinclair and her latest release with Rosie and Tomas in Burning Fields.

Newly released.

Kept in the dark of love and lust.
